Fernside Boulevard Paving Brings Half-Street Closures
Slurry seal work runs from Versailles Avenue to High Street into early November, then new bike lanes and crosswalks follow.
By The Alameda Pulse

The City of Alameda started repaving Fernside Boulevard between Versailles Avenue and High Street the week of October 13, 2026, and the work will come and go until early November. Expect half-street closures, side-street detours and No Parking signs along the stretch this month.
- Where: Fernside Boulevard from Versailles Avenue to High Street, on Alameda's east end
- When: Intermittent work from the week of October 13 to early November
- Key work days: October 14, October 20 to 21, and November 5 to 6 (estimates, subject to change)
- Who: City of Alameda Public Works, as part of Pavement Management Project Phase 44
- What's next: New bike lanes, crosswalks and flashing beacons, some not until 2027
Two-way traffic stays open during the half-street closures, and the new Tilden Way roundabout, your route toward the Fruitvale Bridge, stays open the whole time.
When will the Fernside Boulevard paving be done?
The city's estimate is early November, with the last big work days set for November 5 and 6.
Fernside's getting a slurry seal, a thin coat that seals the road surface. The city says it keeps water and sun from wearing the pavement down and buys a street another five to seven years. Slurry seal usually takes one day per street, and crews work 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The city's Phase 44 project page has the latest schedule, and dates can slip for rain.
Can I park on Fernside during the work?
Not on work days. No Parking signs go up at least 72 hours ahead, and cars left in the zone will be towed.
A few tips from Public Works if you live on the block:
- Don't walk, bike or drive on fresh slurry seal before the road reopens. It's very sticky and it'll follow you onto your carpet, your driveway and your dog.
- Don't run water that could reach the gutter on slurry day. It can leave a permanent stain in front of your house.
What changes on Fernside after the repaving?
Fernside west of High Street gets restriped to look like Fernside east of High: two travel lanes, painted buffered bike lanes and no center turn lane.
City Council approved that design back in March 2025. The city also added quick-build median islands to shorten crossings. Flashing beacons are planned at the western crossings at Versailles and Harvard, and at both crossings at Cornell. Red curbs will also go in at corners from Versailles to High Street and Gibbons Drive, so drivers can see people stepping into crosswalks.
What happens next
Crews finish the paving first, then the striping and safety work follows. The city says some pieces, like the flashing beacons, may not be built until 2027. A paint-and-post bulb-out at the southwest corner of Gibbons, High and Fernside is planned for 2026 and early 2027.
