Labor Day weekend is a big one. Saturday night the Elks Lodge turns into a 1920s ballroom for the Great Gatsby Ball, and Sunday the Antiques Faire brings 800 dealers back to Alameda Point.

On the news side, seven companies want the old Rock Wall building at Alameda Point, and one of them is a nuclear startup. EBMUD will close the Island Drive Park and Ride for six months come November, and the city was asked to put $1 million a year into housing at the Point.

Plus: a new Afghan kitchen on Webster.

The Great Gatsby Ball: 1920s Dancing at the Elks Lodge

Ticket sales end Friday, September 4, and there are none at the door.

From the outside it's the lodge on Santa Clara you've driven past a thousand times. Saturday night it's a Prohibition-era ballroom full of people who know what they're doing.

You don't have to be one of them. A 7 PM beginner lesson covers the three dances you'll need: One-Step, Slow Foxtrot, and East Coast Swing.

Costume is admired but not required. Vintage or modern evening wear both work.

Your $35 gets you the 7 PM lesson, four hours of social dancing, and a night in the Elks Lodge ballroom.

It's put on by PEERS, who've run vintage dances around the Bay for decades.

Alameda Point Antiques Faire: 800+ Booths on the Old Runway

Over 800 dealers set up on the old runway at Alameda Point, first Sunday of every month. Everything for sale has to be at least 20 years old.

What you pay depends on how early you get there. VIP shopping from 6 to 7:30 AM is $20, early buy until 9 AM is $15, 9 AM to 1 PM is $10, and after 1 PM it's $5.

Furniture, jewelry, vintage clothes, pottery, art, books. Bring cash, bring a wagon, and wear walking shoes.

Data Center & Nuclear Firm Might Move to Alameda

Seven companies are now in talks with the City of Alameda over Building 24 at Alameda Point, the large hangar that was once home to Rock Wall Wine Company. The city put the property up for lease or sale and received 7 letters of interest. Building 24 sits at 2301 Monarch Street, is about 63,000 square feet, and has 3 large hangar bays. Right now, 1 bay is leased and the other 2 are vacant.

The 7 interested groups are a pretty wide mix. Apollo Atomics works on compact nuclear power. Bulwark Dynamics is developing autonomous supply vessels, while Giga Energy builds modular data centers used for AI and other computing. Marque Ventures, MRP Menlo Equities, and Paceline Investors are investment or real estate groups. The last company, American Rail, Inc., is listed by the city as a Delaware corporation, but there is very little public information about it.

The big question is what any of these companies would actually do inside Building 24. So far, the city’s public documents do not say what each company is proposing for the space. The City Council met in closed session on September 1 to discuss the price and terms of a possible lease or sale with the 7 groups. No final company or deal has been announced.

The Island Drive Park and Ride Is Closing for About Six Months

EBMUD is replacing the water pipeline that runs under the San Leandro Channel between Alameda and Bay Farm Island, and the work will close the Island Drive Park and Ride for roughly six months. The pipeline it replaces dates to 1983.

The closure starts in November, not now. Parking moves to the Harbor Bay Landing lot at 885A Island Drive, in the old CVS spot. Work runs 7 AM to 7 PM weekdays and the whole job wraps in spring 2028. EBMUD is holding a webinar Wednesday, September 23 at 6 PM for questions on noise, parking, and street access.

The City Was Asked to Commit $1 Million a Year for Twenty Years at Alameda Point

Council was asked Tuesday night to promise an operating subsidy of up to $1 million a year, rising 2.5% a year for twenty years, to the Stardust Gardens supportive housing project. The money would go to MidPen Housing and the Alameda Point Collaborative starting in 2028-29.

This is the same project that got stuck last month over 25 federal housing vouchers. Stardust Gardens is an 80-unit building, and city officials have said the later phases at the Point, as many as 2,300 more homes, depend on it.

• Faction Brewing is getting 3 more years at Alameda Point and a 5-year plan to repay $222,036 in back rent, unpaid rent and late fees. The City Council voted 5-0 on September 1 to move the deal forward, keeping rent at $25,525 a month while Faction continues paying full rent and works on new signage and a permanent patio shade structure.

• Parking in an Alameda bike lane will soon be its own ticketable offense after the City Council gave final approval in a 5-0 vote on September 1. The rule should take effect in early October and will let police or parking enforcement ticket vehicles for blocking designated bike lanes, though the fine amount has not been posted yet.

• Applications for the open school board seat are due September 11. AUSD will appoint a replacement for Jennifer Williams rather than hold a special election. You need to be 18, a registered voter, and living in the district. The seat runs through November 2028. AUSD

• A kitten spent who knows how long ten feet down a rusty pipe at Ferry Point. An Alameda Police animal control officer got him out, covered in rust, paw pads raw from trying to climb. He's named Rusty now and is fostering with the dispatcher who took the call. Patch

Angela's Eatery

Angela's Eatery opened for dinner service at 1427 Webster Street on August 4, and it's chef Saboor Zafari's fourth Alameda restaurant. This is the one where he put his Afghan cooking front and center.

The menu is Afghan by way of Mediterranean and Northern California. Aushak, the spinach and leek dumplings. Three mushroom mantu under saffron yogurt cream. Duck strudel in phyllo. Eggplant tahdig with crispy saffron rice. There's chicken ragù linguine and shrimp risotto too.
