Doodlecakes Bounces Back from Burglary
Doodlecakes was one of several Alameda businesses hit by burglaries last week. Thieves smashed the bakery’s front window early Monday morning and made off with just $10 in tip money. Owners Rebekah and Thomas Scott kept a sense of humor about the break-in, joking online that “hungry cake connoisseurs” were responsible. After a quick window repair, the popular local bakery was back open and serving cupcakes the same day. Read More
Alameda Health Workers Get a Reprieve
Mass layoffs at Alameda County’s public hospitals have been paused — for now. Alameda Health System and county leaders agreed to delay job cuts that could have closed mental health programs and reduced services at hospitals like Highland and Fairmont. The pause gives officials time to find other ways to close a major budget gap without hurting patient care. County supervisors will now explore alternatives before reporting back later this month. Safer Streets in Alameda
Alameda is making big changes to make streets safer for walking and biking. The city recently added new roundabouts on Central Avenue and protected bike lanes on Central and Grand Street to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. With about 40% of Alameda students walking or biking to school, these upgrades help create safer routes while reducing traffic and emissions. The improvements also helped Alameda earn a Gold-level Bicycle Friendly Community designation, an honor held by just 32 cities nationwide. Read More

RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
Pizzeria Pappo

Pizzeria Pappo opened just over a year ago and has already been voted Best Pizza in Alameda. They’re known not just for their pizza and Italian-American comfort food, but also for the kind of customer service that makes you feel like a regular the first time you walk in. I stopped by this week to try it for myself.
While I was there, I got to meet the owner, John Thiel. He grew up in New York eating great pizza, and when he moved to the Bay Area he couldn’t find anything that reminded him of the pies he had back home. So he decided to make it himself. After previously running a restaurant in Alameda called Pappo, he went back to school to learn more about bread and dough, then returned to open Pizzeria Pappo.
I tried a few of their house favorites, including the Papporoni Pizza, the Bianco, and their deconstructed spumoni. Honestly, they were all great, but the Papporoni’s was the standout for me. The hot honey was amazing!
