Webster Tube Bike Path Has No Opening Date Yet
Nightly closures started in April to build a new bike and pedestrian path inside the tube. Caltrans still hasn't said when it opens.

Crews are in the final stretch of building a new bike and pedestrian path inside the Webster Tube, the underwater tunnel connecting Alameda, CA to Oakland, and Caltrans still hasn't said exactly when it'll open. The agency started nightly full closures of the tube on April 6, 2026, and estimated the work would take about six months, a window that runs out in early October.
- Where: Webster Tube (State Route 260), the tunnel linking Alameda and Oakland
- When it started: Nightly closures began April 6, 2026, Sunday through Thursday, 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- How long: Caltrans estimated about six months of work, a timeline that runs out in early October
- Who's building it: Caltrans, with the Alameda County Transportation Commission (Alameda CTC), the City of Alameda and the City of Oakland, as part of the larger Oakland Alameda Access Project
- What's next: No opening date has been announced yet
What's being built inside the Webster Tube?
Caltrans is pouring a new, separated path along one side of the tube just for people walking and biking, so they don't have to share the road with cars or rely only on the neighboring Posey Tube to get across. A Caltrans advisory announcing the closures says the work builds the pedestrian and bicycle path in place, overnight, crew by crew. Project newsletters from earlier this year describe crews placing rebar cages, drilling steel dowels into the tube wall and pouring concrete in sections, curing each one before moving to the next.
When will the new path open?
Caltrans hasn't posted a firm reopening date. The agency's original estimate put the work at about six months from the April 6 start, which lands in early October, but nothing on the project's website or in recent advisories confirms the work is still on that schedule. If you've been navigating the nightly closures since spring, you're still waiting to hear when they end.
How do you get across if you walk or bike?
You don't have to wait for the new path to cross the estuary on foot or by bike. The neighboring Posey Tube stays open the whole time, including overnight, for pedestrians and cyclists as well as drivers heading from Alameda into Oakland. Drivers headed the other way, or anyone who'd normally use the Webster Tube, get routed to the Park Street Bridge during the 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. closure window.
What happens next for Alameda commuters?
The bike and pedestrian path is just one piece of the broader Oakland Alameda Access Project, which also covers sidewalk, ramp and lighting work on the Oakland side and is expected to run into 2029. For the tube itself, the nightly closures continue Sunday through Thursday until Caltrans says otherwise. Check the Pulse's transportation coverage for updates, or watch Caltrans' QuickMap and project site directly if you're planning a late-night crossing.
