Student Connect Codes Bring Free Library Access to AUSD Kids
A new partnership between the Alameda Free Library and AUSD gives every student an automatic library account, no card or sign-up needed.

Every Alameda Unified School District student in grades TK-12 now has free, automatic access to the Alameda Free Library. The new Student Connect Codes program started September 8, 2026, and it doesn't take a library card or a sign-up form to use it.

What is a Student Connect Code?
It's a library account AUSD sets up automatically for every enrolled student, so families don't have to fill out a library card application. If your kid goes to an AUSD school, they're already connected. That's a real change from the old process, where a parent had to bring their student into a branch with ID to start a card.
Do AUSD students need to sign up for anything?
No. The library says access is automatic and free, with no registration required. Kids can walk into any of Alameda's three library branches and start using their Connect Code right away.
What can students actually do with a Connect Code?
It's not just checking out books. Students can borrow up to 5 physical items at a time, use the library's computers, and get into digital resources including e-books, e-audiobooks, the tutoring platform Tutor.com, and the language-learning app Mango Languages. That's handy for homework help, or for picking up a new language over a school break without paying for an app.
What this means for Alameda
It's one less errand for families to handle as the school year gets busy. The Main Library on Oak Street is served by AC Transit routes 21 and 51A and has bike parking out front, and all three branches are wheelchair accessible, so getting there without a car is realistic for most families.
