When are Alameda's storm preparedness meetings?
There are four, two in the morning and two in the evening, so you can pick the one that fits your week.
The city picked the spots with an eye on neighborhoods most exposed to coastal flooding, which is why two are out at Alameda Point and Bay Farm. Each one has a short presentation on the forecast, then time for your questions.
"Preparing for winter storms is a shared responsibility, and we want our residents to know the City is doing its part," City Manager Gerry Beaudin said in the city's announcement of the storm and flood meetings.
When are the next King Tides in Alameda?
The next ones are expected Nov. 24 to 26, about two weeks after the last meeting.
King Tides are unusually high tides. Pair one with a heavy rainstorm and parts of the island can flood. That's the mix the city is bracing for, and it's why it partially opened its Emergency Operations Center on Oct. 19. Crews are also inspecting storm drains and checking pump stations and backup equipment.
How can I get ready before the meetings?
You don't have to wait. The city's short list:
- Sign up for AC Alert to get emergency texts, emails or calls.
- Clear your gutters and drains.
- Check your insurance. Standard homeowners and renters policies usually don't cover floods, and most new federal flood policies take 30 days to kick in.
Free sandbags are still out at three self-serve spots: Lexington Street and West Hope Street at Alameda Point, Washington Park at 1300 8th Street, and Grandview Pavilion at 300 Island Drive on Bay Farm. The limit is five pre-filled bags per resident. We covered the sandbag sites when they expanded.
