AUSD Board Meets Aug. 11 to Vote on Budget, Housing Plan
The school board meets the same night as the first day of school to vote on a state budget update and a new housing resolution.

Alameda Unified School District's Board of Education meets Tuesday, August 11, the same day kids head back for the first day of the 2026-2027 school year. On the agenda: a required update to the district's budget and a resolution about using grant money to build new housing.
When and where the AUSD board meets
The meeting is at Alameda City Hall, in the Council Chambers, not the district office. Closed session starts at 6 p.m., where the board hears items like personnel and legal matters that aren't open to the public, though there's a public comment period first for anyone who wants to weigh in before they go behind closed doors. The board comes back out for open session at 6:30 p.m., which is when the real business happens in front of everyone.

Why the budget revision matters to families
California school districts have to file a "45 Day Budget Revision" after the state finalizes its own budget each summer, updating their books to match whatever Sacramento actually approved for the 2026-2027 fiscal year. That's Resolution No. 2026-2027.04 on Tuesday's agenda. It's not glamorous, but it's the number that determines how much AUSD really has to spend on classrooms, staff and programs this year, once state dollars are locked in.
A housing resolution for grant-funded construction
The second item, Resolution No. 2026-2027.05, approves the district's plan for using grant funding on a new construction housing project. AUSD hasn't laid out specifics like a site or unit count in what's public so far. It's part of a wider trend: districts around the Bay Area, including Berkeley Unified, have used state and grant money to build housing for teachers and staff who otherwise get priced out of the communities they teach in. Whether Alameda's plan follows that same path is worth watching as more details come out.
