Alameda High's New Swim Center Opens This October
A 12 lane, 30 meter pool for swimmers and water polo players opens to Alameda High students this fall, with Encinal's new gym breaking ground right behind it.

If you've driven past Alameda High lately, the giant hole in the ground next to the football field is finally starting to look like a pool. That's because it is one, and it's set to open to students this October.
What's opening in October
The new swim center has a 12 lane, 30 meter competition pool built for swim meets and water polo, plus a separate 4 lane practice pool. There's a new pool deck with lighting, so evening practices won't mean swimming in the dark. The tennis courts at the same site are on a similar timeline, expected to open in October or November.
Here's the part that matters if you're not a student: community swim time isn't part of the October opening. The district says public access comes several months later, so don't plan on open lap swim right away.
Encinal's new gym breaks ground
Across town, Encinal Junior/Senior High is getting its own upgrade. Contractors have broken ground on a full size gymnasium with multi sport court striping, bleachers, a weight room, and a new lobby with restrooms. It's going up on the blacktop next to Encinal's existing gym and tennis courts, and it's expected to be finished in early 2028.
Both projects are paid for with Measure B, the $298 million school bond voters approved to rebuild and modernize AUSD's aging campuses.
More AUSD construction to watch
- Otis Elementary: crews are tearing down the district's 70 year old building, with students set to move back in by August 2028. We covered the two year rebuild plan when it was announced.
- The old Lum campus: a study on turning it into an athletic field is underway, with a draft environmental report expected later this fall. Noise, lights, and traffic are the questions neighbors are asking about most.
Measure B has meant one long construction season across the district, and this fall is when a few of those projects finally start to pay off for kids in the pool and on the court. Check our events calendar for anything AUSD opens up to the public as these wrap up.
